Mazda Kodo Soul of Motion

THE STORY BEHIND MAZDA’S KODO SOUL OF MOTION DESIGN

Design is a big part of creating vehicles. No matter how functional, capable, and powerful a vehicle is, all car owners would like to have a vehicle that simply looks nice. Mazda is committed to creating vehicles that go above and beyond just “looking nice,” however; the brand’s team of skilled designers work to imbue every vehicle in the Mazda lineup with a kind of life that can only be achieved through the care of human hands.

Mazda refers to their particular design philosophy as “KODO Soul of Motion,” embodying the company’s attempts to imitate the fluidity of organic life and, therefore, grant every vehicle a kind of “soul.” Mazda designers view every car as a work of art, attempting to appeal to customers not just through functional design, but by finding that special something. Mazda achieves this by having design teams participate in something called Exploratory Preparation, in which they craft and mold a variety of shapes in order to experiment with which shapes inspire an emotive response in others.

Many of the shapes created through Exploratory Preparation mimic the fluid movements of living creatures, rather than the sharp, angular shapes of machines. That’s where the KODO Soul of Motion design philosophy separates itself from the design philosophies of other vehicle brands. Mazda moves its customers with three-dimensional visions of art and beauty, carefully curated and pieced together by skilled human hands.

Ultimately, Mazda’s KODO Soul of Motion philosophy is less about individual models and more about the big picture. “The job of a designer is… to make sure that when our cars are lined up together, the line-up fascinates customers,” says Mazda’s Design Division General Manager and Executive Officer, Ikuo Maeda.

KODO design is more about creating a cohesive brand through artistic skill and beauty than about following trends, and that is what sets Mazda apart from the competition.
